Serrated Steel Grating Specifications: What Buyers Should Include in an RFQ

Serrated steel grating panel reviewed for bar size spacing surface and RFQ details

Serrated steel grating RFQs should define more than the word "serrated." Buyers should confirm the bearing bar size, bar spacing, cross bar pitch, serration request, panel size, bearing direction, finish, edge details, quantity and drawings before quotation.

Answer summary: For a serrated steel grating RFQ, send the application, bearing bar height and thickness, bearing bar spacing, cross bar pitch, serrated surface wording, panel width and length, bearing direction, support span if known, finish, edge banding, cutouts, clips, quantity, packing and drawings. Serration should not be treated as a guaranteed slip rating unless the project provides a test or standard.

What serrated steel grating means

Serrated steel grating uses bearing bars with a notched or toothed walking surface. Buyers often request it for platforms, walkways, stair treads, drainage areas and outdoor access routes where a more aggressive surface is part of the project specification.

The term may also appear as serrated grating, serrated bar grating, serrated steel bar grating or bar grating serrated. These phrases describe the surface request, but they do not define the complete panel specification.

For product context, see serrated bar grating, steel bar grating and the existing serrated vs smooth steel grating guide.

Serrated grating specification details

Detail Why it matters What buyers should send
Application Gives context for quotation review Platform, walkway, stair tread, drain cover or maintenance access
Bearing bar size Main panel specification Bar height and thickness
Bearing bar spacing Defines the bar layout Center-to-center spacing or project code
Cross bar pitch Defines transverse spacing Pitch, cross bar type or project wording
Serration request Avoids surface ambiguity Serrated bearing bars, project detail or reference drawing
Panel size Needed for fabrication and packing Width, length, quantity and panel marks
Bearing direction Needed for layout review Direction shown on drawings
Finish Affects production scope Hot-dip galvanized, painted, black steel or stainless request
Edge details Changes fabrication Banding, cutouts, toe plate, nosing, side plate or frame

Serrated surface wording is not enough

An RFQ that says only "serrated grating" is missing the bar size, spacing, cross bar pitch, panel size and finish. Two serrated panels can have different weight, opening, fabrication and packing requirements even when the outside dimensions are the same.

If the project has a required serration profile, slip test, standard or drawing detail, include it with the RFQ. QY should not replace a project-defined performance requirement with a generic serrated surface description.

Serrated grating and weight

Serration can affect bearing bar selection and final panel weight, but weight should still be confirmed from the full specification. Buyers planning freight should send panel dimensions, bar size, spacing, cross bar pitch, edge banding, finish and quantity.

See the steel grating weight RFQ guide for weight and packing details.

Common RFQ gaps

Serrated grating inquiries often miss:

  • Bearing bar height and thickness.
  • Bearing bar and cross bar spacing.
  • Panel width, length and bearing direction.
  • Smooth or serrated wording on all required panels.
  • Cutouts, edge banding, toe plates or stair nosing.
  • Finish and coating standard.
  • Quantity, packing marks and destination.
  • Drawings or previous specification.

These gaps can delay quotation because the supplier cannot confirm panel scope from the surface name alone.

RFQ checklist

Before sending a serrated steel grating RFQ, prepare:

  • Application and walking condition.
  • Serrated surface request or project detail.
  • Bearing bar height, thickness and spacing.
  • Cross bar pitch.
  • Panel width, length, quantity and marks.
  • Bearing direction and support span if known.
  • Edge banding, cutouts, toe plate, nosing, side plate or frame.
  • Finish request.
  • Clips and fasteners if required.
  • Packing, destination and drawings.

FAQ

What should a serrated steel grating RFQ include?

Include application, bearing bar size and spacing, cross bar pitch, serration request, panel size, bearing direction, finish, edge details, quantity, packing, destination and drawings.

Is serrated steel grating always anti-slip?

Serration provides a more aggressive surface, but it should not be described as a guaranteed slip rating without the project test method, standard and site conditions.

Does serrated grating weigh more than smooth grating?

Weight depends on the complete bar specification, spacing, panel size, edge details and finish. Buyers should request confirmed unit and packed weight from the quotation drawing.

Can serrated grating be quoted from panel size alone?

No. Panel size alone does not define bearing bar size, spacing, cross bar pitch, serration, finish, edge banding or accessories.
