Steel Grating Weight Chart & kg/m2 Reference
Estimate kg/m2, panel weight, packing weight and freight details before shipment or project quotation.
Use the weight chart before packing and freight planning
A steel grating weight chart is useful for early cost, handling and freight planning, but the final weight should be confirmed from the actual panel drawing and specification.
Weight matters because it affects material cost, handling, pallet design, container loading and freight quotation. Buyers often ask for a weight chart when comparing steel bar grating, galvanized grating, serrated grating or heavy duty grating. The same panel size can have very different weight depending on bearing bar height, bearing bar thickness, spacing and edge banding.
QY Metal Tech uses the buyer’s drawing and RFQ details to estimate panel weight and packing weight. For export projects, the practical shipping weight should include the grating panels plus banding, frames if required, pallet or bundle structure, labels and protective packing.

Weight chart factors
| Bearing bar size | Higher or thicker bearing bars increase steel volume and panel weight. |
|---|---|
| Bearing bar spacing | Closer spacing uses more bearing bars per meter and increases weight. |
| Cross bar spacing | Closer cross bar spacing can add weight and affect panel rigidity. |
| Panel size | Larger panels increase total weight and may change packing method. |
| Surface finish | Hot-dip galvanizing adds zinc coating weight compared with bare steel. |

Steel grating weight chart for RFQ pre-estimate
The values below are approximate bearing-bar base weights for common welded steel grating layouts. Cross bars, banding, cutouts, frames, toe plates, galvanizing and packing will change the final shipping weight.
| Bearing bar | Bar spacing | Base kg/m2 estimate | Typical use | RFQ notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 25 x 3 mmLight-duty flat bar | 30 mm / 40 mm | About 19.6 / 14.7 kg/m2 | Pedestrian access, short-span walkways and light maintenance routes. | Confirm support span before using this as a walkway option. |
| 30 x 3 mmCommon platform bar | 30 mm / 40 mm | About 23.6 / 17.7 kg/m2 | General industrial platforms, catwalks and drainage access. | Popular starting point when cost, open area and handling need balance. |
| 32 x 5 mmHeavier bearing bar | 30 mm / 40 mm | About 41.9 / 31.4 kg/m2 | Higher load platforms, maintenance floors and longer span discussion. | Check panel handling and packing weight before shipment. |
| 40 x 3 mmDeeper light-medium bar | 30 mm / 40 mm | About 31.4 / 23.6 kg/m2 | Walkways or platforms where span review needs a deeper bar. | Confirm deflection and support direction together with drawings. |
| 40 x 5 mmHeavy platform bar | 30 mm / 40 mm | About 52.3 / 39.3 kg/m2 | Industrial platforms, trench covers and heavier access areas. | Banding and frames can add meaningful weight to each panel. |
| 50 x 5 mmHeavy-duty reference | 30 mm / 40 mm | About 65.4 / 49.1 kg/m2 | Heavy-duty covers, high-load access and project-specific layouts. | Use drawings and load data for final quotation review. |
Reference only: these kg/m2 values estimate bearing-bar steel volume only. Final project weight must include cross bars, edge banding, fabrication details, finish, packing and the confirmed panel drawing.
Weight estimate workflow
How buyers should estimate steel grating weight before quotation
Use weight charts to compare early options, then confirm the exact weight after drawings and fabrication details are reviewed.
Confirm product type
Separate bar grating, stair treads, drain covers and fabricated panels.
Confirm bearing bars
Check height, thickness, spacing and bearing bar direction.
Confirm cross bars
Review cross bar type and spacing before estimating secondary steel weight.
Add fabrication details
Include banding, frames, side plates, nosing, toe plates and cutouts.
Add finish allowance
Account for galvanizing, paint, powder coating or stainless material.
Confirm packing weight
Add pallets, bundles, labels and container loading requirements.
Common weight comparison points
| Light walkway panels | Usually selected for pedestrian access, maintenance routes and short spans. |
|---|---|
| Standard platform grating | Common industrial use where load, open area, drainage and cost need balance. |
| Serrated grating | Similar base structure, but serrated bearing bars may be specified for safer walking surfaces. |
| Galvanized grating | Final weight includes steel plus zinc coating and should be confirmed for shipping. |
| Heavy duty grating | Larger bearing bars and heavier construction can change handling and freight planning. |
Why exact weight can change
- Bearing bar direction may change how many bars are used.
- Panel cutouts reduce steel but can add banding around openings.
- Frames, toe plates and stair tread side plates add fabricated weight.
- Galvanizing adds coating weight after fabrication.
- Packing weight matters for export freight and container loading.
RFQ preparation
Information needed for a steel grating weight estimate
For a faster estimate, send enough information to define the steel volume and fabrication details. If drawings are available, they are the best source for panel layout and cutouts.
| Panel data | Panel width, length, quantity and bearing bar direction. |
|---|---|
| Bar data | Bearing bar height, thickness, spacing, cross bar type and cross bar spacing. |
| Fabrication | Banding, cutouts, frames, toe plates, side plates, nosing or fixing clip requirements. |
| Finish | Mill finish, painted, powder coated, hot-dip galvanized or stainless finish. |
| Shipping | Destination, packing preference, pallet marks and container loading notes. |
Weight estimate
Turn the weight estimate into a project RFQ
If the buyer is checking kg/m2, the next useful step is to confirm the drawing basis, packing weight and destination for quotation.
- Panel dataPanel size, bearing bar direction, bar size and spacing.
- FabricationBanding, cutouts, frames, stair treads or toe plates if required.
- ShippingQuantity, packing marks, pallet request and destination port or country.
