Why Does the Quoted Grating Area Differ from the Drawing?

Four circular steel grating panels arranged on a workshop floor.

When a steel-grating quotation shows a different area from the drawing schedule, first check whether both figures refer to the same revision, panel marks, quantity and unit. Then ask the supplier to state how the quoted area was defined. A difference alone does not show that either document is wrong.

A photo can help you recognize a circular panel outline. It cannot tell you how the area on a quotation was counted; use the drawing schedule and the supplier’s written definition for that comparison.

Match the records before comparing the numbers

Put the drawing revision, panel marks and piece count beside the quotation line. Check whether both documents use the same unit and whether the quoted quantity is per panel or for the complete set. If one line covers a different revision, mark group or unit, resolve that mismatch before comparing totals.

Keep the comparison tied to the actual panels. A schedule may list individual marks while a quotation groups them together. Ask the supplier to show which marks and quantities are included in each quoted line; do not infer the mapping from a rounded total.

Ask the supplier to define “area”

Words such as “net” and “gross” are not enough on their own. Ask what boundary was measured, whether the figure follows each finished outline or another stated basis, and whether the drawing’s holes, notches or other cutouts are included or deducted. Keep panel cutouts separate from the regular spaces between grating bars; do not assume they use the same area rule.

Published supplier methods show why the definition matters: one supplier’s area method describes a basis that includes openings and cutouts. That is the supplier’s own example, not a universal convention and not QY Metal Tech’s billing policy. Ask the company that issued the quotation to confirm its method for the exact drawing revision and item marks.

Turn the mismatch into a replyable question

Copy this into your message and fill in the bracketed fields beside the drawing schedule and quotation line:

For drawing revision [revision] and panel marks [marks], quantity [count], please confirm whether quotation line [line] is per panel or for the full set, the unit and area basis used, and how the shown [holes/notches/cutouts] were treated. Please identify any edge or accessory items included in that line or quoted separately, and show the quantity against each panel mark.

For a custom-shaped grating quotation, QY’s product page asks buyers to provide the drawing, opening details, edge treatment, quantity and panel marks. Use the same current revision and marks when requesting clarification so the reply can be matched to the intended panels. The custom-shaped steel grating page explains that drawing-based scope; the steel grating submittal pack covers drawing review, and contact QY to send the completed note.

Do not revise the purchase quantity from a photograph or apply another supplier’s area rule to the quotation. Wait for the quoting supplier to confirm the scope in writing, then compare like-for-like line items.
